The Gentrification of Hood Fashion

So it's apparent that Givenchy has been on Instagram.

Heavy lurking.

And curating the ideas and vision of young, talented and hungry designers.

It's apparent Beyonce's gown at this year's Met Gala was something straight from my IG feed. Designed in form I've seen for years now.

This 'oh so popular' club dress ( for lack of a better word) has been seen on the bodies of the most surgically enhanced booty models and local hood chicks to boot. There was indeed a time in which these dresses reigned supreme in all things fashion for the urban elite.

There were some of us, myself included, who could not see the value in a dress that was saved from being pornographic only by a small lace appliqué and strategically placed jewels. And in closed quarters ( to not ) berated the girls who would dare wear such a piece.

Deemed "unfit" and "sleezy" by the masses, the See Through Mesh dress began to make a less frequent appearance on my feed and I really thought the worst of it was over.

Until tonight.

Now, I have no problem with what Queen Bee wore tonight. She killed it. ( And I'm, headed to the gym to get my squat game right.) But what I do have a problem with is that this design is being praised and "racy" and "unique" on Beyonce, but was well known to be considered " sleezy" and "classless" on IG models and Video Vixens.

And even more so, the thought that the designers of these dresses now have to see their vision, THEIR design being pawned off as amazing couture fashion recognized in elite fashion circles as the creative work of legendary designers.

Yeah, that's where the problem lies.

The appropriation of "urban" culture is nothing new. Folks have been doing since the beauty of black culture was discovered. Kinda like how Marie Claire highlighted Kendal Jenner's cornrow hair style as being " Epic" and " New" when in reality cornrows have been as necessity of African/Black hair maintenance since forever and evers. .. and evers. . . . But I digress.

Let's not sit here and pretend like we haven't seen Beyonce's, J.Lo's and Kim K's dresses before. Let's be real fam. . . . we've been seeing that design for years. They added a train and some Swarovski crystals and call it ground breaking. I think not.

Check these images from iloverussianroulette.com. A Florida boutique that specializes in "that" kind of clothing. Edgy, fitted, sexy.

These are just a few of designs by this brand, like many others that have been pushing this look. Creating something different and fresh.

When I see the obvious design inspirations that are seen in these Met Gala gowns, I can't help but be disappointed at the lack of awareness from the fashion community at large as it relates to black or urban influence.

I can't but think of a phenomenally talented young man who creates the most inspiring designs here in Orlando. Jartavious Lowe is just in high school, but is producing amazing pieces. It hurts me to think that his vision and HIS talent would be pawned off as someone else's genius.

My apologies for the shade I've thrown to you up and coming designers and your pieces that I simply did not understand. My apologies, as it is apparent that YOUR vision and YOUR forward thinking is now being showcased on the red carpet and you are looking on, without praise for your work.

Give credit where it's due people. Let's stop acting like we don't see these people out here influencing how we view fashion and inspiring new trends everyday.

Beyonce, girl, you know the truth.
